Below are three examples of how a PAES Lab can be laid out, drawn to scale from the PAES “So You’re Getting a PAES Lab” facility checklist. They’re examples, not requirements; your lab will be planned around your room. Final layout is confirmed with PAES during planning and installation.
What your room needs
From the PAES facility checklist:
- 25 feet of wall space for the 7 PAES shelving units
- A sink with hot and cold water (Consumer/Service area)
- Wall space for 7 PAES Lab posters (6 ft × 1 ft) and the PAES Lab banner (2.5 ft × 4 ft)
- 10 electrical outlets for appliances, computers and equipment
- 4 or more counter-height work tables
- 5 standard-height work tables (check-in, computers and seated jobs) with 3 chairs for seated stations
- 1 bulletin board
- 2–4 computers with Microsoft Office, 1 lab printer, internet access
- 2–4 tablets for PAES Scan (iPad iOS 15.5+ or Android 6.0+, 9.7 in. screen or larger): 1 per supervisor plus 1 for check-in
- Optional: pegboard or tool cabinet, lanyards/badges for employees
Room tips
- Put Consumer/Service next to the sink and its outlets (grill, cooker, sewing machine).
- Put Construction/Industrial away from the computers and check-in, since it’s the loudest area.
- Keep a clear route of at least 36 in. (ADA) between areas, with a 60 in. turning circle where you can.
- Put check-in and the bulletin board by the door so employees clock in as they arrive.
- Labs fit many room sizes. The examples use common sizes; send me your room dimensions and I’ll draw a floor plan for yours.
Example A: Standard classroom (32 × 30 ft)
A 32 × 30 ft room (about 960 sq ft), the size of a typical classroom. All five areas get their own zone, with a 5 ft main aisle and the sink area on the plumbing wall.

Example B: Narrow or smaller room (22 × 42 ft)
A 22 × 42 ft room. The shelving runs along one long wall with a 4 ft clear aisle in front, and the five areas stack down the room in tour order.
Example layout; final layout confirmed with PAES. Different room? Get a custom floor plan.
Example C: Large room or CTE shop (44 × 40 ft)
A 44 × 40 ft CTE shop or large room (about 1,760 sq ft). Wider zones and open floor for wheelchair turning, small-group work and visitors.
